Wilbur C. Islam, 90,of Battle Creek, died Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Gull Arbor AFC, Richland.
He was born October 3, 1928 in Battle Creek the son of Sam and Alice (Heim) Islam and attended Battle Creek Central High School, graduating in 1946.
He started working at Post Cereals after graduation and was drafted into the U.S. Army, a veteran of the Korean War, receiving a Purple Heart and was honorably discharged in 1952.
Wilbur was united in marriage on August 30, 1952 to Betty A. Moody in Battle Creek and they would have celebrated their 67th anniversary this year.
Wilbur returned to Post Cereals as a machine operator, retiring in 1989 after 411/2 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, two daughters, Lona (Phil) Courtright of Hastings, Beth A. (Dan) Pittenger of FL; a son, David A. (Gidgette) Islam of AZ; eight grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister and four grandchildren
Wilbur and Betty were members of the First United Methodist Church since 1965, a member of Post 25 Year Club and Sportsman Club, a Boy Scout leader in the Post addition, Michigan United Conservation Club, he and Betty were avid pool /billiards players at the former Burnham Brook Center, he was a former member of the American Legion, enjoyed rustic family camping, fishing and deer hunting. He loved spending time with his family.
The family will receive friends 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 28th at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care. Funeral services to celebrate Wilbur's life will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, 111 E Michigan Avenue Battle Creek, MI 49014, officiated by Pastor Linda Farmer-Lewis. The interment will be at 2:00 pm in Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Chapel. Honors will be presented by the U.S. Army.
