William C. Hammons, Jr, 93, of Battle Creek, died of a broken heart on February 24, 2023. His loving wife of 72 years, Georgia, passed away just 19 days prior. William was born January 30, 1930 in Nashville, TN to William C. Sr. and Sallie Kennedy Hammons. As a young boy he moved with his family to Battle Creek and later graduated from Battle Creek Public Schools in 1948. He immediately went on to work for Post Cereals and married the love of his life, Georgia in 1950. William was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country honorably from 1951-1954, being stationed in Japan. After his military service, William returned to work at Post for 40 years, retiring in 1988.
William was an avid golfer and played on many winning teams for the industrial league. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and traveling with his sister and brother-in-law. William and Georgia wintered in Florida and occasionally vacationed in Hawaii. He also liked to take trips to pro golf tournaments across the country.
William is survived by his three children, John (Sharon) Hammons, Barb (John) Mairs and Peggy Seawater; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren and a sister, Gerry Fox.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 2, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where funeral services to celebrate William's life will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 3. Interment with full military honors will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
