William Christian "Bill" Squires, 92, of Battle Creek, died peacefully Thursday afternoon, January 17, 2013 at his home. Bill was born April 22, 1920 in Detroit to David and Ethel (Grosclaude) Squires. He graduated from Detroit Cass Technical High School in 1938 and married the love of his life, Margaret Happell on September 4, 1943. They enjoyed 69 years of marriage.
Bill served his county honorably in the United States Army Air Corp, from February of 1942 to February of 1946. He was stationed in Luzon in the Philippines during World War II. After his time in the military, Bill worked for Grand Trunk Western Railroad as a Locomotive Engineer for 45 years, retiring in 1984.
In 1951, Bill moved from Royal Oak, MI to Battle Creek where he continued his railroad career. Bill was active in the community, volunteering vast amounts of time and service as the Coordinator (with Margaret) of the Franklin Food Pantry. He was a gifted musician, artist and woodworker. He loved his home and beautiful yard, and especially long walks with family dogs, and his special girl, "Izzy." He attended and was active in the First Church of Christ Science. Bill was an inspiration to his family and friends, a loving husband, father, grandfather and a gentleman that will be forever missed.
Bill is survived by his wife, Margaret; three children, Barbara (Cecil) Ramsey of Battle Creek, Jeanette (Gary) Fischer of Battle Creek and John (Donna) Squires of Lake Orion, MI; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
As per Bill's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial visitation will be Wednesday, January 23rd from 4 :00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek. The Memorial Service to celebrate Bill's life will be 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 24th officiated by Reader Carolyn Ticknor of the First Church of Christ Science and Pastor Donald Francis of the First Bellevue Baptist Church. Interment with full, Military Honors will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI. Those wishing to make memorial donations may consider the Food Bank of South Central Michigan or the Salvation Army.
